A rapid proliferation of mobile casinos, lotteries and sports betting services should see gross revenues from mobile gambling mushroom to more than US$19.3bn by 2009, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

The report reveals that lotteries will be the largest money-spinners, with gross revenues of nearly US$7.9bn worldwide by 2009, followed by sports betting (US$6.9bn) and casino-style gaming (US$4.5bn).

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, "Governments are generally less censorious about lotteries than other forms of gambling, with the result that mobile lotteries are likely to become established fairly quickly in a greater number of markets. Given the ubiquity of the lottery culture, it will only require a very small percentage of players to buy their tickets via the mobile handset for the resulting global revenues to run into billions of dollars".

Dr Holden added that if existing prohibitions on casinos and betting services are lifted, then overall revenues could be substantially higher.

"These forecasts are based on the premise that a number of countries -- most notably the US and China -- will remain strongly opposed to the introduction of most mobile gambling services in the short and medium term. Should this situation change, then quite clearly the figures would be revised upwards to reflect this".

Other findings from the report include:

- 2005 will see total mobile gambling revenues pass the US$2 billion mark, including more than US$800 million on sports bets By 2009, the Asia-Pacific region will contribute the largest share of total gross revenues (39%) followed by Europe (37%) and North America (15%).

- Total European gambling revenues are expected to rise from US$202 million in 2004 to more than US$7.2 billion in 2009, with European sports betting revenues up from US$110 million to US$3 billion

- Despite the regulatory constraints, 7.6 million North Americans are expected to use mobile sports betting services by 2009, with more than five million using casino-style services

A few columns back, I wrote that online poker isn't the same game as casino poker. I also said some winning casino poker players might lose over a significant short-run while playing online because they have less familiar tools available to them -- someone who normally shoots a round of golf using fourteen clubs could have trouble golfing while using only three clubs. I then also said playing online is more a game of discipline and the cards you hold, rather than primarily a game of people like casino poker is. While I think most of what I wrote about playing online (higher variance and luck make short-term bad luck more likely to hit good players) is accurate, I think I should have been clearer about several things.

My main point remains: online poker is not casino poker. It’s a different game. That doesn’t mean it’s a worse game or a less valid game -- or a better game. There are just lots of differences, beyond the obvious that you can’t see or hear your opponents. For example, one bedrock poker rule is “one player to a hand.” This rule simply does not exist online. I’m not talking about any hanky-panky either. Players play while chatting on the phone, while sitting with a guest in the same room, and while teaching novices to play. Card Player Magazine publisher Barry Shulman wrote a column pointing out how playing online is a great way to teach someone to play. He’s surely right about that. You can watch and discuss hands as they unfold with a novice. You can explain why you are betting, or checking or checkraising. And of course if the novice is at the keyboard, the experienced player can say “raise” or “don’t call.” Unlike in a casino where you’d get tossed out for such actions, online this is accepted and inevitable.

Online some players play artificially tighter or more passive than they normally would because of the buy-in rules of the sites (where you are limited to buying a certain amount of chips in a day or a week). It’s common in casinos for some looney to play two days and dump a truckload of money. This is far harder to do online. Truly rotten players are protected much more.

Online you can play two games at the same time. You can even be in two hands at the same time. There are plenty of pros and cons to playing two games, but the point here is just to show that this is another major difference in online play.

And this brings me to a mistake in my first article. It’s not so much that you are playing online with only three golf clubs. You are playing with a bagful of different clubs. For instance, in casino games, we get a lot of people tells. Players sometimes even get up and walk away from their hands, making obvious their intention to fold when it comes to their turn. We can’t see our opponents online, but we can notice a lot of things. One big “online tell” is the speed in which a player acts on his hand. If the blinking light representing a player acts immediately, it’s likely this person has clicked the box to “check in turn” or “bet/raise in turn.” What a huge tell! It's usually easy to determine when a player has a no-brainer hand. The immediate “check” is often incredibly revealing. If you are first and take a moment before checking, then if your three opponents immediately check behind you... they very likely have nothing. If the next card is a blank, it’s bluff-city time!

My favorite online trick is to monitor which opponents are playing two games. They are a lot easier to bluff! And they tend not to chase, and when they do bet, they tend to have a hand. If they are spending time focusing on this game rather than the other game, it’s likely for a reason -- they got something. Then also, it’s a great trick to stall if in a pot with a player playing two games. Stall, then bet. They may well have been dealt a new hand in the other game (maybe even a monster!), so they will more easily release a marginal hand in your game.

Tells of acting quickly (or not quickly), ways to exploit people playing two games, people playing with artificially short bankrolls... these are peculiar to online play. Another huge difference -- the software tells you if you’ve won or not! No overlooking hands, no mucking winners, it’s almost childish in that way.

Pretty soon you’ll see a cottage industry springing up: How to play online poker. Poker books, magazines, columns, these can only help so much, because... online poker is not casino poker. It’s its own game.

The latest celebrity to win big in the poker world is actor Tobey Maguire. Playing in Phil Hellmuth’s Poker Invitational event, Maguire earned US$95,480 for winning the $2000 buy in tournament. There were 123 players entered in the event, including many other celebrities. The total prize pool was $246,000 and was Maguire’s first ever tournament win. Gambling reform 'to protect weak' [BBC News]

Tessa Jowell has insisted her plans to overhaul the gambling laws would help protect the "weak and the vulnerable". The culture secretary was speaking during a Commons debate on the Gambling Bill which is expected to spark a rebellion by some Labour MPs. Opposition MPs also oppose the Bill, fearing a rise in gambling addiction. Ms Jowell said she was surprised by the "level of fury" over her plans, adding the shake-up would give Britain the world's toughest regulatory regime. Ms Jowell acknowledged that feelings were "running high" over her gambling law shake-up which would allow mega-casinos to be opened up in Britain. But she stressed the plans would also ensure the removal of slot machines from places where children could get access to them. She also argued problem gambling would increase if laws were not overhauled. But added, as she introduced the Bill at its second Commons reading, that she was prepared to consider MPs' constructive suggestions for changes to the planned overhaul of gambling laws. She also offered two concessions to try to appease her critics. Local councils could be obliged to consult local people on whether they wanted a so-called "super-casino" in their area. "There will be no new casinos if new people don't want new casinos," she told MPs. Action would be taken to prevent casinos getting planning permission "through the back door" by closing a loophole in planning rules. Ms Jowell also promised more research on addiction before the Bill becomes law, but said there would be no cap on the number of new casinos. Despite her assurances, Conservative spokesman John Whittingdale argued: "What the government is proposing to do is introduce a kind of casino never before seen in this country. "Their proposals open the door to a very large number coming into the hearts of our towns and cities." He said that although the government claimed that only 40 casinos would result from the legislation, no limits on the numbers were set in the legislation. He wanted ministers to curb the number of unlimited payout category A machines - those with unlimited prize and stakes. Under proposed rules, up to 1,250 would be allowed in each casino. Addiction fears The Liberal Democrats said it was "positive" that Ms Jowell was prepared to make concessions but the party was still planning to vote against the plans. "Many people are concerned that they don't want to see regeneration in their area if it's done on the back of creating significant misery for many people in that area," he said. Labour MP Stephen Pound was among the 11 backbenchers who signed a Commons motion calling for changes to the bill. He said: "This is a money-making machine. It's going to lure people in. People who don't bet and gamble in any significant quantities will inevitably be drawn in." Former Labour health secretary Frank Dobson said the plans went "contrary to the party's normal, slightly paternalist, slightly puritan image" and were bad for hard-working families. "There's no public demand for it and it's coming from American gambling companies," he said. Tory former culture spokesman Julie Kirkbride said the UK had fair and liberal gambling laws that had stood the test of time. She warned the casinos were going to be open 24 hours-a-day.
